Gareth Thomas, NMHS Corporate Employee of the Quarter
18/05/2021

Congratulations to Gareth Thomas, Maintenance Technician from Facilities Management, our NMHS Corporate Employee of the Quarter.

Gareth is an employee worthy of recognition as going above and beyond is way of life for Gareth. It is evident from his colleagues that Gareth strives to provide a service rather than just completing a job. He does this regardless of whether he is dealing with a manager, taking direction from a supervisor or answering a request from colleagues or other NMHS team members.

His communication skills and the way he conducts himself is polite, respectful, humble and professional and his optimistic attitude continues to make a positive difference at work.

The judges were particularly impressed with Gareth's big picture thinking when attending to work. The nomination included an example to demonstrate this behaviour;

Gareth had a job to rectify rusted components in infant baths at PCH. Rather than just replace, Gareth ascertained how the baths were used, researched options and made suggestions on different materials to use. Workflow issues were identified that was causing rust to the metal components and mould in the hoses. Gareth took photos and respectfully dictated instructions on the correct method for using the baths. This information was provided to Infection Control who plan to use it as education for nursing staff to help mitigate further problems. Gareth delivered an outstanding service demonstrating the importance of his role and how it contributes towards the goals of the organisation.

Gareth leads by example and his attitude, work ethic, alignment to NMHS values, skill and creativity combine to form an asset to NMHS Facilities Management and most importantly staff and patients. Gareth isn’t someone who does a job and moves on, he analyses the issues, researches and make suggestions on permanent solutions to eliminate the issue and in turn this improves NMHS and builds relationships within the hospital.

Gareth goes the extra mile without wanting praise or recognition, but to achieve the best outcome for everyone, especially the patient.

The example outlined earlier displays he is a teamplayer, working with all departments at all levels and uses innovation to develop and improve NMHS to the next level.

Gareth's nominator closed with, "Gareth’s most redeeming professional feature is the human touch he brings, you would struggle to find yourself not laughing and smiling in a conversation with him while still having a sincere and productive result. To have someone so forward thinking, proactive, cares and wants to make the world (well NMHS hospitals) a better place is amazing".

Congratulations and a HUGE well done Gareth!

A special thanks to our generous sponsors: HESTA, Paywise, Smartsalary and Aware Super.

If you've had a great experience with one of our staff members why not put them forward for an award? Next time you are onsite ask how you can submit a nomination.
