Graylands volunteer reflects on 45-years supporting patients
At 97-years-old, Floreat resident Edna Prosser has been volunteering at Graylands Hospital for more than 45 years and hopes to continue for as long as she can.
Mrs Prosser recently announced her retirement as the President of Graylands Hospital Volunteer Services after 35 years, but she will stay on as a committee member.
The dedicated nonagenarian works in the op-shop twice a week and has enjoyed roles helping in the kiosk and cake stalls at fundraisers.
“Originally I started volunteering when my daughter finished St Mary’s school in the mid-1950s,” Mrs Prosser said.
“We used to sew and repair clothes and make cushions for patients.”
Mrs Prosser said the best thing about volunteering was meeting people.
“It is also good to have something you are committed to do,” she said.
Over the years Mrs Prosser has helped raise money to various projects such as refurbishing a kitchen, art murals to brighten the hospital and providing emergency packs and new clothes for patients.
North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) Mental Health Executive Director Theresa Marshall said volunteers such as Edna were an inspiration.
“Our volunteers are an important and valued part of our healthcare service,” Dr Marshall said.
Volunteers fulfil roles such as providing administrative support, visiting patients and helping on the wards. More information about volunteering at NMHS.
