  • Do it for Darcy
Do it for Darcy - donate blood today 05 August 2020 In a race against time the Keeley family is desperately seeking a bone marrow match for four year old Darcy. His Aunty Kim Keeley, Senior OT at OPH, said despite searching both the national and international registry, there has been no match for beautiful Darc. If you are between 18 and 45 years, particularly male and of Australian and/or Irish and/or European descent please book in at your local Red Cross Lifeblood Clinic 13 14 95 to donate blood or plasma and whilst there also sign up to the ABMDR (bone marrow) registry. Upon arriving at your appointment please let the team know you are there to register with 'Do it for Darcy' and that you would like to also be put on the ABMDR registry. This involves a form and a small additional blood sample being taken. If for whatever reason you are ineligible to give blood but are between 18 and 45 years, and keen to be added to the ABMDR registr...

Dental Health Week 3-9 August 01 August 2020 MHPHDS Dental Health Services is supporting Australian Dental Association's Dental Health Week (external site) from 3-9 August, an annual event which aims to make everyone aware of the key things they need to do to keep their teeth and gums healthy. These are: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit sugar intake. Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and preventive care. The theme for this year's week is “Hidden Sugar - how much sugar is hiding in your trolley?”. Sugar harms oral health and this Dental Health Week encourages everyone to ‘get sugar savvy’ with three main sugar messages: Consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of free sugar per day as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Choose foods with le...

Refugee Week 14-20 June 2020 08 June 2020 Refugee week runs from Sunday June 14 to Saturday June 20, 2020 with the theme 'Year of Welcome'. The Week runs across Australia annually and celebrates the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. Refugee Week aims to create a culture of welcome for refugees throughout the country. The Humanitarian Entrant Health Service (HEHS), previously known as the Migrant Health Unit, has been providing post-arrival health care to refugees settling in Western Australia for over 40 years. While COVID-19 has placed refugee arrival into WA temporarily on hold, HEHS continues to support existing clients with their health care needs. In 2019, HEHS provided services to people from 24 different countries around the globe. In addition, HEHS prides itself on being a culturally diverse organisation. HEHS held a morning tea in celebration of Refugee Week on Friday 19 June where Anita Cl...
  • Clinical Lead and SCGH Gastroenterologist, Dr Hooi Ee
June is the month to be bowel aware and prevent bowel cancer 01 June 2020 June is Bowel Cancer Awareness month and the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network Clinical Implementation Unit (WACPCN CIU) team who support the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) in WA is reminding Western Australians to be bowel aware and for those eligible (50-74 years) to complete their bowel screening test kit. A Commonwealth initiative, the NBCSP provides a free test kit, a faecal occult blood test (FOBT), in the mail to eligible Australians aged 50-74 years every two years. It detects invisible traces of blood in your poo, which can indicate changes in your bowel that you cannot see or feel and may need investigating. Completing the FOBT test is quick and easy. Clinical Lead and Head of Gastroenterology at SCGH, Dr Hooi Ee, says “At this time, it’s important to continue to screen and follow-up positive test results. We recognise there is anxiety over enga...
